A Legacy for Supporting Young Artists

The Stephen M. Hoenig Theatre Artists Fund was established in 1992 by the Hoenig family—Stephen's mother and brother—as a tribute to Stephen’s enduring passion for the arts. Stephen was a dedicated theatre student in New York when his life was tragically cut short at the age of 19 due to an unfortunate accident. He deeply understood that even the most talented young actors might never receive the recognition they deserve due to financial barriers. In creating this fund, his family sought to honor his spirit, dedication, and generosity by supporting others in their pursuit of artistic dreams.

For over three decades, the fund provided annual stipends to gifted college students, awarding close to $200,000 in support by 2023.

As Stephen had attended classes at Steppenwolf, it was only fitting that when the fund reached its conclusion, its remaining resources were gifted to Steppenwolf in his memory. The funds now support Steppenwolf’s Education and Engagement programs—an initiative closely aligned with the fund’s original mission. Many talented individuals have benefited from the fund, launching remarkable careers in theatre and beyond. The Stephen M. Hoenig Theatre Artists Fund will ensure Stephen’s legacy continues to inspire and uplift the next generation of artists.
